What is RAT?

RAT is a registered Swimming Team with USA Swimming.  We are a team dedicated to promoting the sport of swimming.  RAT is a privately owned and managed registered non-profit 501 c3 organization with a seven-member Board of Directors governed by these bylaws. RAT is concerned about the safety and security of all its members.  Accepting and following the Safety Plan and Youth Protection Policy is required of all coaches and club officers.

How do I become a RAT?

Simply send an email to the webmaster (see contact page) and ask, "How do I become a RAT?"  He will ask you a few questions about your swimming experience and then send you instructions and forms for joining. Anyone going into Middle School through their senior in high school can join RAT.  Most of our swimmers also participate, or are preparing to participate, on their local high school team.

Is the team only for Riverton residents?

RAT is a regional swim team.  Many members of RAT live in Riverton, Herriman, Draper, or South Jordan; but membership is open to swimmers everywhere.

How much does it cost to be a RAT?

RAT fees vary depending upon the season.  Go to the Train page for more information. When compared with the annual cost of participating in other sport club programs, RAT fees are minimal.  For example, compare RAT fees to the following:

 * From Dive Utah, "Swim Lessons are $199 for 5 lessons that are 1 ½ hours each."

 * From local city recreation center, "Semi-Private Swim Lesson Rate is $16 per hour".

If extended to an hourly rate RAT fees are less than $1 per hour.  Seriously... a bargain.

Can I join RAT if I am a beginner?

Yes, our coaches are trained to conduct practices to serve the needs of beginning swimmers along the side of expert swimmers.  The head coach will spend most of his time with the more advanced swimmers, while the assistant coach helps the beginners (in separate swim lanes) with beginner stoke and technique skills.

Can I join RAT if I am an expert swimmer?

If you are a serious athlete and expert swimmer, RAT is the team for you.  Our head coach has coached many state champions and has helped hundreds of swimmers significantly improve their personal performance.

When and where will I practice?

Go the the schedule and look for the appropriate season (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) in the calendar.  Click the event for the time and location.

What equipment do I need?

Any one-piece bathing suit will work.  Team competition uniforms are available on the (shop) page if you would like to compete in the USA swim meets.  RAT's official team uniform is the Black and Grey Shining Star from Speedo.  Goggles are recommended and are available at any sporting goods store.  You will be issued a RAT team swim cap when you register.

Will I compete in swim meets?

Competing in swim meets is optional.  RAT is a member of USA Swimming and supports the swim meets offered by Utah Swimming (the local USA Swim group).  Participating in USA swim meets requires additional paperwork and fees.

What if I have Hydrophobia or Aquagenic Urticaria?

OK, swimming is not for you, but it is a great sport for almost everyone else.
